Australian Sites

The federal government bodies which are involved in the area of alpine research are the Australian Heritage Commission (AHC), the Australian Nature Conservation Agency (ANCA), (which is now the Bidiversity Group of Environment Australia) and Environment Australia. Australian weather information can be found at the Bureau of Meteorolgy site. Information about Australia's legal structure has been prepared by the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department. Information about Australia's system of government has been compiled by the Attorney-General's Department.  And the National Library of Australia has provided a guide to government information.

 


International Sites

International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU)
This web gives information on ICSU, its Members, Associates and interdisciplinary bodies and on some partner organizations. Information is also given on ICSU's activities and publications and on forthcoming meetings of members of the ICSU family.

IUCN : The World Conservation Union
The Union’s mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies through out the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. The site is available in French and English.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
The main objective of UNESCO is to contribute to peace and security in the world by promoting collaboration among nations through education, science, culture and communication in order to further universal respect for justice, for the rule of law and for the human rights and fundamental freedoms which are affirmed for the peoples of the world, without distinction of race, sex, language or religion, by the Charter of the United Nations.

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
The UNEP is built on a heritage of service to the environment. As one of the productive consequences of the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, UNEP provides an integrative and interactive mechanism through which a large number of separate efforts by intergovernmental, non-governmental, national and regional bodies in the service of the environment are reinforced and interrelated. UNEP was established as the environmental conscience of the United Nations system.

World Meteorological Organization
From weather prediction to air pollution research, climate change related activities, ozone layer depletion studies and tropical storm forecasting, the World Meteorological Organization coordinates global scientific activity to allow increasingly prompt and accurate weather information and other services for public, private and commercial use, including international airline and shipping industries. WMO's activities contribute to the safety of life and property, the socio-economic development of nations and the protection of the environment.

World Resources Institute (WRI)
The Institute is an independent center for policy research and technical assistance on global environmental and development issues. Created in 1982, WRI is dedicated to helping governments and private organizations of all types cope with environmental, resource, and development challenges of global significance.
